‘What the Mountain Has Seen’, exhibition view, ERL Gallery.
New Decolonial Focus at the Exhibition Research Lab Gallery
The Exhibition Research Lab (ERL) Gallery is pleased to announce a new focus on decolonial creative and curatorial practices from the Global South and its Diasporas.
Developed by Dr Christine Eyene, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art, Co-Director of Exhibition Research Lab at Liverpool John Moores University, and Research Curator at Tate Liverpool, this new thematic focus, enhancing LJMU’s research culture, will consist in a new series of exhibitions, film screenings, performances, talks and conferences. It will also include guest curated exhibitions, as well as artists residencies embedded within Liverpool’s history, local communities, and contemporary art scene.
In addition to consolidating the gallery’s existing collaborations with Liverpool-based international art events and institutions, the programme will aim to establish new partnerships ranging from grassroots projects to major art platforms including biennials, as well as international cultural venues and agencies.
Dr Christine Eyene said: “I am honoured to take on this new responsibility and shape a new artistic programme for the ERL Gallery. My intention is to expand the gallery’s remit, building on a vast network of creatives and international partners, working in collaboration with colleagues, the ERL steering committee, and external partners. I also look forward to fostering new connections and cross-cultural encounters in Liverpool’s diverse and thriving art scene.”
The new programme starts with the recently opened exhibition ‘What the Mountain Has Seen‘, an archive and contemporary art display building on research developed by Dr Eyene on the themes of memory of the land, botanical histories, and colonial legacies connecting Liverpool and Lolodorf in Cameroon.
The ERL Gallery is co-directed by Dr Christine Eyene and Dr James Schofield.
